Plakias Town

Plakias is a beautiful coastal village on the southern coast of Crete, known for its stunning beaches, relaxed atmosphere, and beautiful natural surroundings. Nestled between the Libyan Sea and scenic mountains, Plakias offers a mix of tranquility and essential tourist amenities.

The village has a variety of services and visitors will find supermarkets and local shops selling souvenirs, beach essentials, and traditional Cretan products. In the village there are two pharmacies and local doctors providing basic medical services.

Plakias is an ideal destination for those looking to enjoy a mix of relaxation, nature, and accessibility to essential services while exploring the beauty of southern Crete.

Not only beaches

Plakias and its surroundings offer plenty of activities for all kinds of travelers. Nature lovers can join organized excursions including to Samaria Gorge, one of Crete’s most famous hikes, with breathtaking scenery and a challenging yet rewarding trek. Or to Aradena Gorge that is a popular spot for bungee jumping. Hiking paths are plenty around Plakias and give the opportunity to enjoy panoramic views and breath mountain.

More activities including diving, snorkeling, fishing trips, water sports, and horseback riding are available in the area. Local diving centers offer courses and guided dives.
Live events are happening also often in Plakias. 2-3 times a week in different places you can experience Cretan music or other kinds of music, depends on the specific event.

We cannot omit Preveli Monastery on the top of Preveli palm beach that offers a glimpse into the island’s history and spiritual heritage, its also a must to visit.

Beaches in the area

The area surrounding Plakias is renowned for its variety of beaches offering unique landscapes and experiences. The main Plakias Beach for over 1.3 km  it is sandy and in part, well-organized with sunbeds, umbrellas, water sports and beach bar while parts remain unspoiled for those seeking a more natural setting.

To the east you can find Damnoni Beach where there are also tavernas and the beach is also organized in parts with sunbeds and umbrellas. Ammoudi and Ammoudaki beaches are smaller, more secluded coves known for their clear waters and relaxed atmosphere, often favored by naturists. Shinaria Beach is located eastern of Ammoudi and its famous for its rich marine life, making it interesting for snorkeling and diving.

Souda Beach and Fotinari beach to the west, located not more than 10 minutes walking distance from Foteini Martha accommodations, are providing crystal waters and rich marine life for snorkeling. Tavernas, beach bar and sunbeds are present in Souda beach.

One of the most famous beaches in Crete, Preveli Palm Beach, is located  at about 10 km east of Plakias. This exotic beach is where the Kourtaliotiko River meets the sea, forming a stunning lagoon surrounded by a lush palm forest. Accessible by boat or a scenic hiking trail after leaving the car nearby, Preveli offers breathtaking views and a unique tropical-like setting, making it a must-visit destination in southern Crete.

Bar & Restaurant

Plakias has plenty of choices to eat, drink, and relax. You’ll find cozy tavernas and beachfront restaurants serving fresh seafood, traditional Cretan dishes, and international options. Many spots have amazing sea views and the quality of the food is optimal.

Several nice cafés in front of the sea offering a wide choice to relax. Many of them serve also breakfast and light meals.

In Plakias you have a choice for nightlife. There are few cocktail bar, each one with its own style offering many kind of music, from live events to dance music. Some beach bar stay also open till busy if you are looking for a more romantic atmosphere.
